
Barend Petersen
Deputy Chair – Representative of the Archbishop of Cape Town & Executive Chairman of DeBeers Group South Africa
Barend Petersen, a chartered accountant is a corporate leader with a wealth of experience in mining and financial services. He represents Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa on the Investor Commission.
Barend, an ordained minister of religion, co-founded the Institute for Committed Action in South Africa with Archbishop Makgoba, which brings together the government, mining industry, labour and civil society to provide safe space for Courageous Conversations between the parties.
Barend is a director of the De Beers Group and the Executive Chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines. He is a member of the Board of the Minerals Council of South Africa, the chairperson of the Diamond Leadership Forum and the Chairman of Macrovest Capital, a private equity investor. He is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee of the South African Revenue Services.
Barend is a member of the Steering Committee of the Mining Faith Reflection Initiative. Those involved in the Initiative share a vision for mining to serve the common good better, by enabling those engaged and affected by its activities to lead lives that are fulfilled, just, and reflect human dignity and respect. They do so with regard for both current and future generations.
Barend is a founding member and Trustee of the Indlulamithi South African Scenarios 2030, a multi-stakeholder research-driven initiative that seeks to help understand South Africa’s trajectory and to inspire communities, institutions and individuals to influence change to facilitate informed, long-term decisions and to trigger strategic action.
