Forging a sustainable mining future

This month, the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 marked a significant milestone by hosting its first in-person session. The two-day event was a tremendous opportunity for the multi-stakeholder Commissioners to discuss and deliberate the initiative’s strategic objectives and actions.

The outcomes of the session will play a crucial role in shaping the Commission’s priority focus areas and engagement with the Investor Supporter Group, which is now comprised of investors with a combined total of over $15 trillion in assets under management (AUM).

Adam Matthews, Chair of the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, outlined plans for the Commission’s future activity, including several key milestones aimed at driving responsible and sustainable mining practices globally:

1. Following the in-person meeting, the Commission will unveil its first conclusions at the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) annual member conference in Toronto, scheduled for October 2024.

2. The Commission will engage on the emerging action plan at the Investing in African Mining Indaba in February 2025.

3. The Commission will present its conclusions in time for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains in May 2025.

4. The Commission’s final investor agenda will be showcased at the PRI In Person annual member conference in Brazil in 2025.

In addition to these milestones, Adam Matthews is representing PRI and the finance sector to provide investor input into the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals.

The first in-person session set a robust foundation for the initiative’s future outputs. With the combined expertise of the Commissioners, the Technical Advisory Committee, and the substantial support from the Investor Support Group, the Commission is well-positioned to lead the charge in promoting responsible mining practices.
